One particular reason is to avoid the “ready, fire, aim” syndrome. In the best cases, this rapid assessment enables me to quickly grasp a situation and plot a path forward.
In the worst cases, however, this rapid-fire thought process creates a chasm between me and the people I’m working with. When this happens, I find myself jumping forward to a conclusion while others are still processing the information at hand.” Learning to be patient is extremely important because you give others time to understand the information and offer their own opinions instead of alienating them.
Impatience is Self Sabotage
Data science, in particular, is a field that requires time to evaluate a set of data and form a conclusion. If you don’t take the time to truly appreciate others’ views or delve into the data set, you will sabotage yourself. Hidden trends in information may not appear, and you could be left out to dry and your team and management may lose trust in your capabilities.
Before responding with your opinion, take a breath and try to solicit other opinions. Sit back and allow time for your brain to evaluate and dig into the information so you can see things you might not in the heat of the moment.
